It's Worth A Flutter

Melbourne women are spending thousands of dollars on designer eyelash extensions in the latest cosmetics craze.

Many beauty-conscious women are spending big money, some up to $8000 a year, on lengtheners for lashes.

Kerry Wood from LashDesign Studios in South Yarra said business at her eyelash extension parlour had tripled in recent months.

And hits on her website had increased fivefold.

"We have jumped from 1700 hits a month to 5000. It's just amazing how many people are interested in the service," Ms Wood said.

The self-crowned "Madame Lash" of Melbourne said she is struggling to keep up with the demand, booking out weeks in advance thanks to positive word-of-mouth.

"Women show their friends the impact the procedure has on their eyes and their overall beauty and the friends want to get in on it, too," she said.

Ms Wood said women were prepared to sit for hours to have up to 150 individual synthetic hairs attached to each eyelid.

Celebrities with lash extensions include supermodel Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

Ms Wood said it was likely many starlets had them but it was hard to distinguish fakes because they were invisibly joined.

Not to be outdone by the Hollywood crowd, Madonna often wears false lashes said to be worth $10,000.
